October was a difficult month for mid-cap stocks. The Nifty Midcap 100 fell 3.42%, while the Nifty 50 gained 1.91%. The difference of 5.33 percentage points shows how sharply the performance of large and mid-sized companies diverged during the month.

Yet the decline was far from uniform. Laurus Labs, Coforge, Persistent Systems and Indian Hotels recorded strong monthly gains. Other stocks retained substantial longer-term gains despite falling in October.

Looking at monthly returns alongside longer-term performance and the distance from trading highs and lows gives a fuller picture of these differences.

How the combined score works

Let’s use four price-performance measures to compare the stocks:

  • Monthly return: A higher return receives a better rank.
  • One-year return: A higher return receives a better rank. For recent listings without a full year of trading, the table uses the return from the IPO issue price.
  • Gain from the low: A larger percentage rise from the 52-week low receives a better rank.
  • Distance below the high: A smaller percentage gap from the 52-week high receives a better rank.
  • Combined score: The four ranks carry equal weight. Their average becomes the combined score, with a lower score indicating a stronger position.

For recent listings, the high and low cover the available trading history. Their IPO-price returns also cover a shorter period than the one-year returns of established stocks, which limits direct comparison.

The score measures price performance. Earnings growth, valuations, debt and cash flows require a separate assessment.

What stands out in the numbers?

Laurus Labs combines monthly momentum with longer-term gains

Laurus Labs leads the table with a 21.49% October gain and a 147.90% one-year return. Its reference price also matches the period high, leaving the distance below that high at zero.

There is company-specific earnings context behind the attention on Laurus. Its September-quarter revenue reached ₹2,206 crore, up 33% year on year, while EBITDA rose 78% to ₹762 crore. The company’s results discuss growth in both its contract development and manufacturing business and its affordable-medicines portfolio.

However, healthcare’s representation in the table extends beyond Laurus. Aurobindo Pharma, Mankind Pharma and Glenmark also feature, with different monthly and annual outcomes.

Aurobindo’s monthly gain was only 0.56%, but its one-year return stood at 52.51%. Mankind and Glenmark fell slightly during October. Their positions show why a longer-term ranking can include stocks that had a subdued month.

IT services delivered strong monthly gains

Coforge gained 16.92%, while Persistent Systems rose 14.57% during October.

Their longer-term figures tell different stories. Coforge’s one-year return was 13.13%, compared with 1.45% for Persistent. A strong month can therefore sit alongside a much more modest annual result.

Coforge also stood 102.86% above its period low and just 0.81% below its high. These measures capture a substantial recovery within the year, which a one-year return alone would not fully reveal.

That is the value of looking across the columns: they describe different parts of the stock’s price journey.

Digital businesses had an uneven month

Nykaa, Lenskart, Groww, Meesho and Paytm feature prominently in the table, but their October returns were mixed.

Nykaa rose 9.17%, and Groww gained 3.86%. Lenskart, Meesho and Paytm declined.

These companies also operate in different markets, including beauty retail, eyewear, investing, e-commerce and payments. Their shared use of digital distribution does not give them the same growth prospects, costs or profitability.

For the recent IPOs, the starting price matters particularly. An investor who received shares at the issue price may have a very different return from someone who bought after listing. The table’s IPO-price gains describe the former starting point.

Financial and consumer stocks added variety

Federal Bank gained 7.03% in October, while Bank of Maharashtra rose 2.51%. Their one-year gains of 44.67% and 39.24%, respectively, also supported their positions.

Indian Hotels delivered an 11.39% monthly gain and stood just 1.55% below its period high.

Elsewhere, consumer-facing stocks moved in different directions. Marico rose 1.78%, while Radico Khaitan fell 6.40%. Phoenix Mills gained 1.15%.

The selected stocks span several businesses. A single sector explanation would miss much of that variation.

Why some falling stocks still rank well

Of the 20 stocks in the table, 11 gained during October and nine declined.

MCX, for example, fell 3.38% during the month but retained a 75.18% one-year gain. BHEL declined 6.71% in October while remaining up 48.34% over one year. Radico Khaitan’s monthly fall also followed a positive longer-term performance.

A four-measure score gives each monthly move only one-quarter of the weight. Stronger performance on the other measures can keep a stock relatively high in the ranking.

This makes the table useful for comparing price trends across periods. It also explains why it is different from a simple list of October’s biggest gainers.

What should investors take from the table?

The central finding is the wide difference between individual stocks during a weak month for the index.

The next step is to connect price performance with business performance. For a company that has rallied sharply, investors need to examine whether earnings and cash flows have improved enough to support its valuation. For a stock recovering from a low, the key question is whether the underlying business has recovered too.

The four measures also overlap. A rising share price can improve its monthly return, lift it further above its low and bring it closer to its high simultaneously. Equal weighting therefore does not create four independent assessments of a company.

Use the ranking to identify stocks for further research, with the investment decision resting on the business, the price paid and the role it would play in a diversified portfolio.

FAQs

1. How did the Nifty Midcap 100 perform in October 2026?

The Nifty Midcap 100 declined 3.42% in October, while the Nifty 50 rose 1.91%. Mid-caps therefore underperformed large-caps by 5.33 percentage points during the month.

2. What does a lower combined score indicate?

A lower score indicates a stronger average position across the four price-performance measures used in this comparison. It does not assess the company’s valuation, financial strength or suitability for a particular investor.

3. Why are returns since the IPO issue price shown for some companies?

Lenskart, Groww and Meesho had less than one year of trading history at the October cut-off. Their issue-price returns provide a longer available reference, but the period and starting point differ from those used for established listed stocks.

4. Can a stock fall during the month and still have a strong combined score?

Yes. Monthly return is one of four equally weighted measures. A stock can fall during the month while retaining strong longer-term gains and remaining relatively close to its high.
