Jio changed how millions of Indians access the internet. What began as a telecom service offering affordable mobile data in 2016 has grown into a business serving more than 53 crore customers, with operations spanning mobile connectivity, home broadband, cloud services and artificial intelligence.

A decade later, Jio is preparing for another major milestone.

Jio Platforms Limited is launching a ₹30,213 crore IPO, with a price band of ₹1,065 to ₹1,119 per share. At the upper end, the issue values the company at approximately ₹10.3 lakh crore, making it one of India's most valuable businesses.

Jio's annual profit has crossed ₹30,000 crore, its capital expenditure has fallen significantly, and its customer base continues to grow. At the same time, its return on capital has declined, and a substantial part of its earnings still comes from traditional telecom services.

So, what exactly are investors buying through the Jio IPO, how strong are its financials, and what does its valuation tell us?

Let's find out below.

IPO at a glance
₹30,213 crore fresh issue | ₹1,065–₹1,119 price band

Jio enters the public market with an established telecom business, more than 53 crore customers and over ₹30,000 crore in FY2026 net profit. The main questions are how much further its earnings can grow and whether the IPO valuation accounts for that growth already.

Jio Platforms IPO Details

The IPO is entirely a fresh issue of up to 27 crore equity shares. There is no offer for sale (OFS), so existing investors are retaining their holdings through the issue. The funds raised will go to the company, primarily for debt repayment.

What Does Jio Platforms Actually Do?

Jio Platforms Limited (JPL) is the company being listed. Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited (RJIL) is its main telecom operating subsidiary. RJIL runs the mobile and broadband network, while JPL is the holding company for telecom and various digital businesses.

Reliance Industries is JPL's promoter. Meta, Google and several other investors also own shares in JPL. The group structure helps explain which businesses and earnings belong to IPO investors.

Telecom still drives most of Jio's earnings

Jio Platforms operates across several technology businesses, but Reliance Jio Infocomm remains its largest earnings engine. The contribution of RJIL to the consolidated group in FY2026 shows the scale of that dependence.

Jio Platforms Financial Performance: FY2024 to FY2026

Jio has reported consistent growth in revenue and profit over the past three financial years. Operating margins have also remained strong.

The company's revenue grew by about 14.6% in FY2026, while EBITDA grew by 18.8% and net profit by 15.1%. EBITDA margins have remained above 50% throughout the period.

However, return on average capital employed (ROCE) fell from 12.83% in FY2024 to 10.76% in FY2026. Earnings are growing, but the return generated relative to capital employed has weakened. This matters for a business that has invested heavily in spectrum, fibre and 5G infrastructure.

What do the latest quarterly results show?

For the quarter ended June 2026, Jio Platforms reported revenue of ₹39,173 crore, EBITDA of ₹20,865 crore and net profit of ₹7,764 crore. Its EBITDA margin improved to 53.26%.

Operating margins continued to improve, although net profit grew more slowly than EBITDA. Depreciation, finance costs and other below-EBITDA charges are important when reviewing the full earnings picture.

The Interesting Change in Jio's Financials: Falling Capital Expenditure

Telecom companies require large investments before they can earn money from their networks. Jio spent heavily on its 5G rollout, fibre network, spectrum and related technology. Its annual cash capital expenditure has since fallen substantially.

Financial yearCash capexCapex as % of revenue
FY2024₹53,510 Cr48.8%
FY2025₹44,268 Cr34.5%
FY2026₹34,184 Cr23.3%

In FY2024, Jio spent an amount equivalent to almost half its annual revenue on cash capex. By FY2026, that proportion had fallen to approximately 23%.

How much cash remains after capex?

MetricFY2024FY2025FY2026
Operating cash flow₹57,662 Cr₹68,156 Cr₹77,556 Cr
Less: Cash capex₹53,510 Cr₹44,268 Cr₹34,184 Cr
Operating cash flow less capex₹4,152 Cr₹23,888 Cr₹43,372 Cr

Operating cash flow less capex is a research measure, rather than the company's reported free cash flow. Interest payments, leases, deferred spectrum payments and other commitments must also be considered.

FY2024 ₹53,510 Cr ₹4,152 Cr left FY2025 ₹44,268 Cr ₹23,888 Cr FY2026 ₹34,184 Cr ₹43,372 Cr Cash capex Operating cash flow less capex
Jio retained ₹43,372 crore of operating cash after capex in FY2026, compared with ₹4,152 crore in FY2024. Lower network investment spending accounts for much of the improvement.

The improvement is substantial. Operating cash flow increased at the same time that the company spent less on network investment, leaving much more cash after capex.

The next question is whether this spending level can continue as data use grows and the network requires further upgrades. Spectrum, lease and financing payments will also affect cash available to shareholders.

Why Is Jio Raising ₹30,213 Crore?

Most of the IPO proceeds are intended for debt repayment rather than a new network rollout.

Jio plans to use up to ₹27,500 crore from the net proceeds towards repayment or prepayment of specified borrowings of Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited. The remaining funds, after issue-related expenses, are intended for general corporate purposes.

Lower borrowings can reduce future financing costs and strengthen the company's financial position.

Jio's net debt is not its total financial obligation

As of June 2026, Jio Platforms reported approximately ₹61,372 crore in total borrowings and ₹51,833 crore in cash and marketable securities, producing reported net debt of around ₹9,539 crore.

Reported net debt
₹9,539 Cr
As of June 2026, under the company's stated definition.
Deferred spectrum payments
₹1,04,514 Cr
A separate obligation excluded from reported net debt.

The net-debt calculation excludes deferred spectrum payments and lease liabilities. These remain relevant financial commitments even after conventional borrowings are reduced.

For investors: Review net debt alongside spectrum dues, lease payments and future investment requirements. Each has a different repayment profile and accounting treatment.

Jio's 53 Crore Customers: How Much More Can the Company Earn?

Jio has already reached enormous scale. Its next stage of revenue growth depends on adding customers, increasing average customer spending and selling additional services.

Operating metricJune 2026
Total customers53.33 crore
5G customers28.49 crore
Home broadband customers2.86 crore
Monthly average revenue per user (ARPU)₹215.60
Monthly data consumption per customer43.7 GB

Between June 2025 and June 2026, average monthly data consumption per customer increased from 37 GB to 43.7 GB, a rise of approximately 18.1%. ARPU increased from ₹208.80 to ₹215.60 during the same period, a rise of 3.3%.

Data consumption growth
+18.1%
37 GB to 43.7 GB per month.
ARPU growth
+3.3%
₹208.80 to ₹215.60 per month.

Jio's customers are using much more data, while the increase in spending per customer remains modest. Tariff changes, premium plans, bundles and new services could play an important role in future monetisation.

What could a ₹10 increase in ARPU mean?

At a base of 53.33 crore customers, a ₹10 increase in average monthly revenue per user could mathematically represent approximately ₹6,400 crore in additional annual revenue.

Illustrative calculation: 53.33 crore customers × ₹10 per month × 12 months = approximately ₹6,400 crore a year.

This scenario assumes the customer base stays constant and the increase is realised across all customers throughout the year. Actual revenue and profit would depend on customer retention, plan changes and the additional costs involved.

Jio versus Bharti Airtel: What Does the Competition Tell Us?

Bharti Airtel remains Jio's most important listed private-sector competitor in mobile connectivity. One major difference between them is the average revenue generated per user.

During the June 2026 quarter, Jio reported monthly ARPU of ₹215.60, while Airtel's India mobile ARPU was approximately ₹264. Airtel therefore generated roughly ₹48 more per reported mobile customer each month.

OperatorMonthly ARPUWhat it suggests
Jio₹215.60Large customer base with room to improve monetisation
Bharti Airtel₹264Higher average mobile revenue per reported customer
Vodafone Idea₹195Competition remains relevant to industry pricing

Operator-reported ARPU figures for the June 2026 quarter. Subscriber definitions and revenue inclusions differ, so comparisons are indicative.

Jio's strengths include subscriber scale, reach and 5G adoption. Airtel's higher ARPU points to its ability to earn more from its customer mix. For Jio, the challenge is to raise average spending while keeping its large, price-sensitive customer base engaged.

Vodafone Idea also remains relevant to telecom pricing. The sector's future revenue growth will depend partly on competition and the willingness of consumers to pay more for connectivity.

Beyond Mobile: Where Could Jio's Next Growth Come From?

Jio's growth opportunities now extend well beyond mobile data. Its existing network and customer relationships give it several routes to expand.

Growth area 1
Home broadband
JioFiber and JioAirFiber can support recurring revenue from home internet, entertainment and connected services. Profitability depends on connection costs, usage and retention.
Growth area 2
AI and enterprise technology
JioBrain, cloud-linked services and enterprise technology may create new revenue streams. Separate product-level earnings disclosure remains limited.
Growth area 3
Customer upgrades
Higher-value plans, bundles and greater use of premium services may improve revenue per customer over time.
Growth area 4
Remaining 2G users
Affordable devices and mobile broadband adoption may bring more users onto data plans, subject to affordability and competition.

The financial contribution of these opportunities will take time to establish. Today, the majority of Jio Platforms' revenue and profit is earned by its telecom subsidiary.

Jio Platforms IPO Valuation: Is ₹10.3 Lakh Crore Expensive?

At the upper IPO price of ₹1,119 per share, Jio Platforms would have an estimated post-issue market capitalisation of approximately ₹10.30 lakh crore, assuming the entire fresh issue is subscribed.

Using FY2026 consolidated net profit of ₹30,049 crore, this translates into a historical price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple of approximately 34.3 times.

Valuation measureLower price bandUpper price band
IPO share price₹1,065₹1,119
Estimated post-issue market cap₹9.81 lakh Cr₹10.30 lakh Cr
P/E based on FY2026 profit32.6x34.3x

Finnovate calculation based on approximately 893.90 crore existing equity shares, up to 27 crore new shares and FY2026 consolidated profit. It assumes full subscription and excludes any future earnings benefit from debt repayment.

What does 34.3x P/E mean? At the upper price band, investors pay approximately ₹34.30 for every ₹1 of Jio's FY2026 annual earnings.

Jio has an extensive network, large customer base and proven profitability. The valuation also reflects expectations for growth in broadband, AI, cloud and enterprise technology.

Whether the price is attractive depends on how much earnings can grow, how much new capital the business needs and whether returns on invested capital improve. Airtel is a useful reference point, although its international operations, debt profile and business mix require adjustment for a fair comparison.

Strengths of Jio Platforms

  • Established market position: Jio has more than 53 crore customers and an extensive mobile and broadband network in India.
  • Consistent financial growth: Revenue, EBITDA and net profit have increased over the past three financial years.
  • Improving cash generation: Falling cash capex has allowed more operating cash to remain after infrastructure investment.
  • Strong 5G and broadband presence: Its large 5G customer base and expanding home broadband operations offer opportunities for additional services.
  • Technology and distribution capabilities: The group has developed infrastructure, software, devices and digital platforms that could support future expansion.

Risks Investors Should Examine

  • Heavy dependence on telecom earnings: RJIL contributed nearly 95% of consolidated EBITDA in FY2026.
  • Ongoing infrastructure and spectrum costs: Network maintenance, upgrades, spectrum payments and future capacity expansion require continued investment.
  • Declining return on capital: ROCE has fallen despite higher reported earnings.
  • Reliance group arrangements: Distribution and other related-party relationships are important to Jio's business operations.
  • Regulatory and technology risks: Telecom licences, data protection, cybersecurity and changing technologies can affect future costs and operations.
  • Uncertain contribution from newer businesses: Separate earnings from AI, cloud and several digital products are not fully visible in published disclosures.
  • Valuation risk: Jio's share price at listing will reflect investor expectations for future earnings and returns on capital.

Jio Platforms IPO GMP: Should Investors Consider It?

Grey Market Premium (GMP) is the unofficial premium at which IPO shares are reportedly traded before listing. These quotations can differ between sources and change frequently.

As of 19 October 2026, Jio Platforms IPO GMP is being quoted at around ₹245–₹250 per share, representing approximately 22% above the upper price band of ₹1,119. This translates into an indicative price of ₹1,364–₹1,369 per share, based purely on current grey-market quotations.

The premium indicates positive sentiment ahead of the IPO, but grey-market activity is unofficial and unregulated. The actual listing price will depend on investor demand and prevailing market conditions. Financial performance, valuation and business risks remain essential considerations when evaluating the IPO.

Jio Platforms IPO Review: What Should Investors Consider?

Jio Platforms enters the public market as an established, profitable powerhouse rather than an early-stage growth gamble. Its 53.33 crore customers, robust operating margins, and expanding cash generation provide a formidable financial foundation. Crucially, its declining cash capex signals a turning point. If Jio sustains steady revenue growth without reverting to heavy infrastructure spending, its free cash flow profile will drastically improve.

However, key structural challenges remain. Telecom still drives the vast majority of earnings, returns on capital have dipped, and heavy spectrum and lease obligations persist. Furthermore, Jio has yet to separate the independent profitability of its newer technology ventures. At an implied valuation of ₹10.3 lakh crore (34.3x FY2026 earnings), the market is pricing in steep expectations.

Ultimately, this IPO bridges two distinct realities: a mature, highly profitable telecom giant and an unproven, developing technology ecosystem. For investors, the core thesis hinges on one variable: how efficiently Jio can convert its digital tech potential into hard earnings and superior returns on invested capital.
